The View from My Window: From Our Tour Directors to You Posted April 29, 2020
As we enter our third month of a global response to COVID-19, messages of hope, unity, and perseverance remain as important as ever – both in the world of tourism and our world at large.
So as we wait for travel conditions to improve during this time of social distancing, have a glimpse of our destinations through the camera lenses of our tour directors, and read about the many ways they find beauty, humor, and hope just outside their windows, as our world continues to persevere throughout these challenging circumstances.
1. Wine and an aperitif among the mountains of Palermo… Maurizio Caminita, Italy: “While having an aperitif with my wife on our balcony of our apartment in Palermo, it brings me back beautiful memories of our travelers when on tour, and while we talk and enjoy the beautiful colors of spring I stop for a moment and tell my wife, “God, how lucky we are to have good health and freedom.”
Maurizio’s Odysseys tours:
Southern Italy & Sicily, Sicily in Depth 2. Lush, green African trees (planted by a loved one)… Antonio Marangabassa, Kenya: “View from the verandah of my sitting room. These trees and flowers were planted by my sweet wife, Eunice.”
Antonio’s Odysseys tour:
Classic Safari: Kenya & Tanzania 3. Ancestral traditions honored in the Andes… Oscar Oviedo, Peru: “Missing my museums and dreaming of walking the streets of my old city again. These days have helped me to appreciate the wisdom of my ancestors and their respect for nature and while enjoying one of the last sunsets of our summer, I give the last touches to these replicas of pre-Hispanic pottery I made in clay, inspired by the ocean view on one side of my balcony and the magnificent Andes framing the city of Lima in the background.”
Oscar’s Odysseys tours:
Treasures of Peru, Machu Picchu to the Galapagos 4. A playful imagination run wild with talking animals… Seddik Aassim, Morocco: “A few days ago I had visitors just outside my window: a family of donkeys who’ll probably announce the end of the lockdown soon.”
Seddik’s Odysseys tour:
Moroccan Discovery 5. Evergreen trees, white-capped peaks, and mountain upon mountain of fresh British Columbia air… Linda Quinn, Canada: “Nestled in a rain shadow between the Coastal Mountain range and the semi-arid Cariboo/Chilcotin region, divided by the mighty Fraser River. View taken from my dining room window, looking West.”
Linda’s Odysseys tour:
Canadian Rockies Explorer 6. Nature in full bloom… Thamila Rudolf, Slovenia: “From my home I can see that nobody can stop the beauty of nature … Big hug from Ljubljar and see you soon.”
Thamila’s Odysseys tour:
Pearls of Dalmatia 7. Optimism for a future of renewed health and fitness… Dheerendra Singh Nathawat, India: “The view from my window is of this lush green public park right next to my house. As I sip my morning Indian masala chai, I look at this park with running tracks and fitness machines installed where people from the neighborhood used to throng from early morning with one single goal, better fitness. Now with the lockdown it is empty and I feel as if it needed this time for the park to recuperate and shed old leaves and produce new ones … I am sure in the near future people will start coming again and the first time they meet each other after such a long break, they all will be thrilled and start the day with laughter yoga.”
Dheerendra’s Odysseys tour:
Mystical India 8. An upside-down bird, in an upside-down world… Tessa Clarke, New Zealand: “I’m looking outside my kitchen window in this upside down world and it’s nice to know that our native Tui songbird is happily doing what it loves doing … and I’m looking forward to being able to welcome visitors back into my beautiful and kind country once again … and do what I love doing … please come visit!”
Tessa’s Odysseys tours:
New Zealand Adventure, Exploring Australia & New Zealand 9. The morning sun on Table Mountain… Chris McWilliams, South Africa: “I am fortunate to live in the winelands of the Constantia Valley, which rests under the southern slopes of Table Mountain. Visitors to Cape Town are familiar with the spectacular north face. From my window, I have a beautiful view as the morning sun from the east warms the surrounding Constantia Valley mountain range.”
Chris’ Odysseys tours:
Africa’s Wildlife, Southern Africa Odyssey 10. Trees waking up for springtime (not to mention Castle Hill!)… Irena Demsar, Slovenia: “Watching the spring awakening is great. I can literally see the leaves growing.”

Pearls of Dalmatia *Bonus submission* The endless possibilities arising with the dawning of each new day… Odysseys tour director Maurizio Caminita captured this beautiful photo of sunrise from his balcony on the Italian island of Ustica mere days before COVID-19 lockdown. In his words, “I look at the sunrise as hope for our future, connecting the sunrise to the beginning of a new day after the pandemic, looking forward to a new and better future.”
At Odysseys, we, too, remain optimistic for a new and better future as we persevere through COVID-19, and we hope these photos and messages of support from our tour directors worldwide help you to find a renewed eagerness to explore the vast world beckoning right outside our windows, one day hopefully soon.
Until then, we hope you’ll stay tuned for part 2 of this initiative –
